Peterborough Schools’ Singing Strategy

I wholeheartedly recommend the project. This is a once in a generation opportunity for schools, their leaders, teachers and pupils to develop their skills and aspirations.
— William Prideaux, director

Peterborough Sings! delivers the Arts-Council England-funded city-wide Peterborough Schools’ Singing Strategy on behalf of Peterborough Music Hub and Peterborough City Council. The Singing Strategy aims to transform provision for singing in the city’s primary schools and is delivered through a programme of large-scale “big sing” events, themed to give an insight into a particular style or genre of music. Themes to date have included Big Band Swing, Broadway, Rock’n’Roll, Abba, The Beatles and Film Music as well as two curriculum-linked singing days to mark the World War one Centenary in 2014 featuring specially-commissioned music by popular children’s composer Rowland Lee.

“What a wonderful opportunity for pupils from different schools, cultures and backgrounds across the city to work and perform together. It’s really fantastic to see how much enjoyment and self-confidence they gain from the experience!”

- Di Roberts

Each of the “big sing” events features a live band or orchestra and as well as having the opportunity to rehearse and perform with them the children are able to meet the musicians and learn about their instruments during a number of fun and interactive “meet the band” sessions.

As well as providing expert vocal coaching and the opportunity to work alongside professional musicians, an important part of the singing days is to give young people the experience of performing live on stage in a professional venue. At the conclusion of each day the children perform live on stage to very appreciative audience of friends and family.

Amazing, brought me to tears as I was so proud seeing my son up there. They should all be so proud of themselves...

Directed by William Prideaux these events have engaged thousands of children from primary schools across Peterborough and beyond and have been fantastically well-received by children, staff and parents alike!

What our teachers say…
